Brighton Pier is a wonderful example of a Victorian British seaside pleasure pier, built as a testament to just how proud Britain was at that point and how entertainment began to be taken seriously and viewed as something, which should be available to many. Officially known as the Brighton Marine Palace and Pier, it has stood as a beacon, jutting out into the sea, since it opened in 1899 (although it wasn’t actually completed until 1901), when pleasure was a simple walk along the pier, with games and food along with exhilarating sea air to stimulate the senses. A concert hall was also provided; where shows were performed, bringing entertainment to the masses, but this was updated to a theatre by 1911, thus bringing a slightly more upmarket feel to the Pier.
As it looks today, the Pier is a classic example of Victorian architecture, making it of significant architectural interest. It is now a Grade 2* Listed Building, which means that the façade and the internal aspects of the building have to be preserved and any works done have to be appropriate and in keeping with the original appearance of the pier. Although damaged extensively by fire in 2003, it has been lovingly restored and refurbished.
It is a staggering 1,722 feet in length and many claim that it is one of the finest piers ever built; if not the finest. Yet throughout its life it has evolved and changed to suit the needs of its visitors. By as early as 1932 a Ferris Wheel had been incorporated and the pier was both lengthened and its promenade widened, meaning that it became even grander and more of a tourist attraction.
